Jaunpur is a city located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated on the banks of the Gomti River, about 65 km northwest of the city of Varanasi, 228 km southeast of the state capital Lucknow and 732 km southeast of New Delhi. Jaunpur district has two Lok Sabha seats and nine Vidhan Sabha seats. In the larger political context, Jaunpur Lok Sabha constituency assumes great importance on account of being adjacent to the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency currently represented by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. Election here is a high stake one.
